Education or Capitalism?

Ok, I wasn't a political science major or involved in the AP Government class at my high school, so maybe it's simply my ignorance that brings me to this topic, and now I'm seeking some enlightenment.

We keep hearing how our schools are cutting programs, losing teachers, crowding classes and shutting down.  We also hear about the fantastic Twins stadium, the taxes created to pay for it and now the Vikings want a piece of the program too.

I don't have problem with capitalism and the free enterprise system, but I do have a problem with where it seems we're placing education on the priority list.

If we can raise $392 million to give $158 million/year franchise a new home (essentially mortgage free mind you), I'd hope we could do something meaningful with our school system too.

I'm not interested in a 'debate' about Target Field here, I'd just like understand why we can't do the same for our education.  Our children are our future (thanks Whitney) and though many parents hope they're raising the next Joe Mauer or Wayne Gretzky, it's going to take more than good athletes for the U.S. to keep up with the rest of the world.
